These two maps of Antarctica offer an interesting contrast. The map on the left is what we normally think of as Antarctica. However, the map on the right is the actual land under the ice cap.
This map shows the most common perception of Antarctica. But since the continent is covered by ice, we don't see the actual land of Antarctica.
This map shows what Antarctica looks like under the ice. Much of the continental "land" area is actually held below sea level because the ice covering Antarctica is so heavy.
